PATRIOTS NOTEBOOK: Cassel showing his stuff in preseason

SouthCoastToday.com - New Bedford, MA, USA - It's what Patriots backup quarterback Matt Cassel has jokingly called himself. The description is an apt one considering that Tom Brady has never missed a start or much less a significant stretch during a game since taking over after the second game of the 2003 season.

Since it's the preseason, it's Cassel's time to shine. Entering his third season with the team, Cassel resumed his anointed role after Brady came out after taking 13 snaps in the first two drives of Friday night's 13-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

During his limited appearance on Friday, Cassel completed four of seven passes for 32 yards and led the team on its only touchdown scoring drive of the night.

"There's a lot of things that we can work on and a lot of things that we can get better at," Cassel said. "I hit on some throws and being the first preseason game right out of the box, it was fun to be out there playing and get hit a little bit."

Cassel has come a long way since his first preseason game. Against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2005, Cassel was flushed and ran with the ball so much that their usually unflappable head coach was on the verge of total exasperation by halftime.

Bill Belichick said at the time: "As long as I can stand it, he'll be in there."
