Trying to Lose 50 Million Pounds
Wall Street Journal Blogs - New York,NY,USA - When Ian Smith launched a weight-loss campaign for African-Americans, he chose a specific — and lofty — numerical target: 50 million pounds lost. That bold, specific goal has helped garner publicity, but means the project risks failure.

Since its introduction in April 2007, Dr. Smith’s 50 Million Pound Challenge has gained press coverage in Jet and Essence as well as newspapers around the country. It has a prominent sponsor in State Farm insurance, and basketball star LeBron James is the latest celebrity to lend his name to the cause, joining Team USA teammate Kobe Bryant, retired football star Michael Strahan and

Heading into the busiest part of his summer, he took a break to sit down with The Plain Dealer.

Olympic spot looking easy for US; setting roster, not so much
CBS News - New York City, NY, USA - Despite beating Venezuela by 43 points in its first outing at the FIBA Americas Championships, there are no plans to block off traffic on the Las Vegas strip for a championship parade following the Sept. 2 gold medal game just yet. Still, after getting a whiff of the competition, it's safe to assume the U.S. National Team will be in that final, will take home the gold and should start working on its conversational Mandarin in preparation for next summer's Olympic games in Beijing.

That might reek of the same pompous air Americans have been accused of stubbornly clutching onto even

Lebron James to Host Saturday Night Live's Premiere Show
Cleveland Leader - Cleveland, OH, USA - Is it just me or does this sound a bit worrisome? Lebron James is following up his gig on the ESPY Awards by hosting the first episode of Saturday Night Live in September. Could that be a hint that he is looking to head off to either Los Angeles or New York in the next couple years?

I felt with the Cavaliers putting together a winning organization, that it would squelch his desire for Broadway or Tinseltown. With James doing yet another high profile television show he may be showing his cards leave.

Kobe headlines 17 players expected for USA hoops minicamp
ESPN - USA - Kobe Bryant headlines the list of 17 players who are expected to report for U.S. national team minicamp this weekend in Las Vegas.

The three-day camp on the campus of UNLV will be used to select the finalists for next month's FIBA Americas tournament, the regional qualifier for the 2008 Olympics. The roster must be trimmed to 12 players before the tournament starts on Aug. 22.

There are 32 players in the national team program, but 15 are unavailable for minicamp, leaving the Americans with fewer players than expected. Coach Mike Krzyzewski said last week he thought 18 or 19 would be

The ESPYs: It's LeBron's 'Lebrogative' and That Guy Jimmy Kimmel's Funny Too
The BV Entertainment Newswire Blog - New York, NY, USA - The ESPYs (otherwise known as the mother lode of sports montages) is where the worlds of sports and entertainment collide. Fittingly at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

This year's sports-celeb fest was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and LeBron James and provided laughs, tears, and of course endless self-promotion of ESPN.

But there's more to the ESPYs than kicks and giggles (and really -- shameless ESPN promotion). The ESPYs raise money for the V Foundation, which was created to honor Jimmy Valvano, men's basketball head coach at N.C. State from 1980-1990, who died of cancer shortly after making his memorable "Never Give
