Venus, Serena reclaiming their dominance
USA Today - USA - The Williams buzz is back, thanks to the power of two.

With victories in two of three Grand Slams this year, Venus and Serena Williams are reclaiming their dominance in the game they ruled from 2000-2003. Even rivals say women's tennis is better for it.

How's that for the power of two?

"Every day they are active and visible in tennis, the sport is stronger," tennis legend and women's rights pioneer Billie Jean King says. "They have the 'it' factor, and people want to see that and will always support it."

Venus and Serena have always generated attention. Who could not find something compelling

Will Agassi's US Open Torch Flame Out?
Sports Central - Vienna, VA, USA - If Andre Agassi had ideas of passing his U.S. Open torch to a fellow American when he retired last year inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, his compatriot successors are not reciprocating.

At 35-years-old in 2005, Agassi went all the way to the finals, a run punctuated by a 7-6 in-the-fifth classic quarterfinal win over James Blake. Then last year, with back ailing, Agassi delivered again. This time, the heroic effort came in the second round in the form of another one-for-the-ages thriller, a five-setter over Marcos Baghdatis. If Jimmy Connors/Aaron Krickstein was once the staple rain delay feature on the Arthur Ashe

Peters Twp.'s Riske courts opportunity to play in US Open
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Pittsburgh, PA, USA - Tennis icon Billie Jean King was having lunch on the terrace of the Claremont Resort in Berkeley, Calif., watching a tennis match at a nearby club.

King noticed one of the players.

"She was a good ball-striker, and that was a major strength of her game," King said. "She had a great attitude and was very respectful of those around her. As she grows and matures, those qualities will allow her to be a champion in life, regardless of what happens on the court."

King was talking about Peters Township junior Alison Riske. Riske met King on Aug. 10 at a speaking engagement

Dungy Serves at the Pleasure of the President
AOL SPORTS - New York, NY, USA - Tony Dungy can add yet another line to his resume, right behind "Super Bowl-winning NFL head coach" and "Best-selling author." That line? "Presidential appointee."

You can read more about the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation by clicking here. Already on the council are Jerry Colangelo, Art Linkletter, Cokie Roberts, Stephen Baldwin, Hillary Duff and Danny Wuerffel.

That would be one hell of a dinner party, wouldn't it? Pretty much everyone would look around the table, then point to Danny Wuerffel and say, "Who's that guy?" Seriously, did Bush win a bet with his brother Jeb over the '97 Sugar Bowl

Lebron James to Host Saturday Night Live's Premiere Show
Cleveland Leader - Cleveland, OH, USA - Is it just me or does this sound a bit worrisome? Lebron James is following up his gig on the ESPY Awards by hosting the first episode of Saturday Night Live in September. Could that be a hint that he is looking to head off to either Los Angeles or New York in the next couple years?

I felt with the Cavaliers putting together a winning organization, that it would squelch his desire for Broadway or Tinseltown. With James doing yet another high profile television show he may be showing his cards leave.

NBC, Fox make sense for Patrick
USA Today - USA - Studio hosts get lots more on-air face time than anybody else in TV sports. So Dan Patrick, after anchoring SportsCenter for 17 years and popping up to host things such as ABC/ESPN's NBA coverage, presumably has a pretty marketable mug — rather than just a face for radio.

Patrick, leaving ESPN Aug. 17, has only announced he'll do a syndicated radio show and said he doesn't "have any magic potion that says I know what I'm doing."

So where would he fit in? Handicapping the prospects:

•NBC. NBC's Olympic announcing lineup, with notable exceptions such as Mary Carillo, has suffered from excessive earnestness.

Venus Williams triumphs at Wimbledon for fourth time
Ha'aretz - Tel Aviv, Israel - Venus Williams won tennis' most prestigious tournament for the fourth time yesterday, beating surprising finalist Marion Bartoli 6-4, 6-1.

It was Williams' sixth Grand Slam title, and her first since winning Wimbledon in 2005. She was also the champion at the All England Club in 2000 and 2001.

At No. 31, Williams became the lowest-ranked women's winner in Wimbledon history. Plagued in recent years by injuries that sent her ranking sliding, she rediscovered her championship form this week on the surface that always seems to inspire her best efforts.

"It has been a long road back," Williams said during the trophy ceremony. "I

Iowa Speedway is a 7/8th-mile trioval located in Newton. Wallace, a co-owner of the facility, admits that he hopes to some day host a Busch or Craftsman Truck series race at the track.

"We really, really hope," Wallace said. "I've learned a long time ago to keep my mouth shut. Obviously, we've asked for a truck race or a Busch race. It's in [NASCAR President Mike] Helton's hands, or [Chairman] Brian France. We're just trying to do the best job we can right now.

07/08/07 QUICK, ITK: Bending it like Beckham
Sunday Paper - Atlanta, GA, USA - The Fourth of July is a bizzaro holiday, especially this year. Having a holiday fall on Wednesday throws the whole week out of whack. Not that I don’t appreciate and value my independence in every way, shape and form, but taking the time to plan fun activities for Independence Day just disappeared into the black hole recesses of my mind.

The problem is that I’m a horrible vacation and day-off planner. I never think about it. And, the hump day holiday phenomenon made matters worse, with people disappearing into vacation land the previous weekend and others turning the day off into

Fitzgerald: from ball boy to pro football star
Richmond Times Dispatch - Richmond, VA, USA - Some children grow up not knowing exactly what their parents do for a living.

Larry Fitzgerald didn't have that problem. He understood his father's duties as the sports editor of the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder.

"That was a blessing," the younger Fitzgerald said. "He got me in as a ball boy for the [Minnesota] Vikings, and that helped me realize my dream at a young age."

Fitzgerald's dream was not to be a ball boy. His dream was to be a professional football player. He has accomplished that goal and then some. Fitzgerald is a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals.

But he is not just

Wade weary over failures
Times Online - UK - AWAY from the tennis court, one of Virginia Wade’s true pleasures is the theatre. The New York resident is currently enthusing over Terrence McNally’s new play Deuce, starring Angela Lansbury and based on a pair of ageing doubles players.

Casting her mind back more than three decades, she remembers another West End production that included the line: “I hear Virginia’s doing very well at Wimbledon.” Wade won the US Open in 1968 and the Australian Open four years later, but her battle to land the Wimbledon title she craved seemed destined to end in failure, so whenever the dialogue was heard,

Billie Jean King a crusader for equality - Munster, IN, USA - In 1972, America was at war in Vietnam, President Nixon signed Title IX into law and future soccer star Mia Hamm was born.

Billie Jean King testified before Congress on behalf of Title IX, and three generations later the result is more female athletes, doctors and lawyers.

Saturday marks the 35th anniversary of the landmark legislation that bars gender bias in athletics and other educational programs.

"I kept thinking about women's teams sports," King said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I grew up with team sports and knew how vital it was that we have opportunity for girls to be in
