Author Wally Lamb to speak - Best-selling author Wally Lamb will be among the speakers at the second annual "United in Hope: Celebrating Literacy Through a Community Voice" event.

The two-hour program of entertainment, information and local celebrities will take place on Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at the High School of Commerce. Admission is free and open to the public.

Lamb, whose works have been selected twice by Oprah Winfrey for her book club, is the author of "She's Come Undone" and "The Hour I First Believed," among other books.

The "United in Hope" event is all about the importance of reading and writing.

"A good story can open up the world to you," Lamb said in a telephone interview from his home near Storrs, Conn. "It can open the perimeter of your own limited existence.

"In some ways it expands the world, and in other ways it tells us we're all in this together and we're really not so different."

Lamb has seen first-hand the transformative power of language. He was has taught not only in high school and college, but also at York Correctional Institution, a women's prison in Niantic, Conn.

He began giving writing workshops there 11 years ago. The first time he went reluctantly, as a favor to a friend. Many of the inmates suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. There had been two suicides.

But Lamb said he found that he was moved by the women's stories. One inmate challenged him to come back. He wound up publishing two collections of the women's writings.

Lamb said he had never tried to write fiction before 1981. But shortly after his son was born, he sat down and started to write. "I don't know quite how fiction and fatherhood are entwined at the roots, but they are," he said.

He said a recurring theme in his books is "the use and misuse of power. My plea for the world is that the powerful can be merciful."...
