OK Mozart fest rolling out red carpet |
NewsOK.com (subscription) - Oklahoma City, OK, USA - For nine days each June, the population of Bartlesville increases by about 15,000 as this northern Oklahoma community presents the OK Mozart Festival. This year marks the festival's 24th season, a red-carpet celebration that champions the musical genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The 2008 edition of OK Mozart will kick off at 6 p.m. June 13 with an opening-night celebration that culminates in a spectacular fireworks show. This free event will be held outside the Bartlesville Community Center.
Ben Vereen, a Tony Award-winning performer who has appeared in the Broadway productions of "Jesus Christ Superstar,” "Pippin,” "Grind,” "Jelly's Last Jam,” "Fosse” and "Wicked,” will demonstrate his versatility in "An Evening with Ben Vereen” at 8 p.m. June 14.
Virtuoso pianist Peter Nero is the headliner for a special Father's Day performance at 2 p.m. June 15. Anna Starzec, a 2007 winner of the Young Artists Piano Competition, will perform in a 7:30 p.m. concert that also will feature the 2008 competition winner.
The critically acclaimed New York Theatre Ballet will make its OK Mozart debut at 7:30 p.m. June 16 with a program that features an hour-long version of Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty.” The program also will feature Agnes de Mille's ballet from "Carousel,” Anthony Tudor's "Jardin aux Lilas” plus a contemporary dance piece by an emerging choreographer.
On June 17, the 8 p.m. concert is titled "Celebrating George Gershwin.” Special guest artist Mark O'Connor will perform some of his original works. Also planned are selections from "Porgy and Bess” and a two-piano version of "An American in Paris.” Rounding out the evening will be the Sextet for Strings in G Major by Brahms.
Amici New York, the festival's resident orchestra, will be featured at 8 p.m. June 18 in a program titled "Mozart and the Masters.” Violinists Erica Kiesewetter and sisters Ani and Ida Kavafian will perform J.S. Bach's Concerto for Three Violins and Orchestra. Barry Douglas, the gold medalist at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, will be the featured soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-Flat Major, K. 482. The program culminates with a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-Flat Major.
