O'Donnell vs Carey, if the "Price is Right" |
AXcess News - Georgetown, KY, USA - CBS has confirmed that it is in talks with comedian Drew Carey as a possible host for it's long-running daytime game show, The Price is Right, which was hosted for eons by Bob Barker who is retiring. But in the running for the host spot is Rosie O'Donnell, but between the two stars it might come down to the Right Price as to who will replace Barker.
Bob Barker retired from the Price is Right in May after 35 years as the game show's host and finding his replacement has been a challenge, says CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler. "Those are the biggest shoes in Hollywood to fill," said Tassler.
Though it's kind of a stretch for CBS' Tassler to say, considering Barker's been at it longer than the CBS executive, but Barker's successful run on daytime television has been a money-maker for CBS for over three decades and if the right host isn't found, the Price is Right will go the way of many an old long-running game show and disappear.
Drew Carey is someone fans of the Price is Right can accept, compared to Rosie O'Donnell, who may have been good for gossip, but O'Donnell's not good enough to make the average person feel at home with her as the host of the Price is Right. Those fans just want light entertainment and the Price is Right is just that. Light and easy, that's the way Barker did it for years and it's what earned him an audience following that made the CBS daytime game show such a success.
Television spots are already running showing Carey quizzing contestants on CBS' new primetime game show, "The Power of 10", as fans of Carey's 'ordinary guy humor' sit back and watch the comedian portray middle American blue collar life so well. Perhaps too well, as to why CBS ask Carey to consider hosting the Price is Right if they're launching a new game show with him in the spotlight? Perhaps CBS thinks the new show will bomb before it even goes 13 weeks and if they leave Carey hosting The Power of 10 until it tanks, it could make Carey a bad choice for other programs. Why? Because no body likes a loser!
CBS' The Power of 10 is the brainchild of Michael Davies, the mastermind behind "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and might just be the television network's plans to groom Carey for the role of host on a prime-time game show before the comedian graduates to fill Barker's shoes. Bob Barker himself may even have some say-so in who the final winner will be.
As far as Rosie O'Donnell goes, last month she said she would take over for Barker as the Price is Right hostess, but she didn't want that long of a contractual commitment and would never consider moving to Los Angeles. CBS has not commented.
