NBC backs Fallon for Late Show

AZ - AZ, USA - NBC said comedian Jimmy Fallon is its top choice to succeed Conan O'Brien in 2009, when O'Brien is scheduled to replace Jay Leno as host of "The Tonight Show."

Marc Liepis, an NBC spokesman in New York, confirmed a report today on Broadcasting & Cable's Web site in which Rick Ludwin, executive vice president for late night programming, said Fallon is "at the top of our short list."

Ludwin declined an interview request.

NBC, a unit of Fairfield, Connecticut-based General Electric Co. and the leading network for late-night viewing, signed Fallon, a "Saturday Night Live" alumnus, to a contract earlier this year for unspecified projects.

The network plans to have O'Brien replace Leno in 2009, leaving a vacancy in O'Brien's 12:35 a.m. time slot. On "Saturday Night Live," Fallon played an anchor on the fake news segment, "Weekend Update."

"We know him from SNL and saw what he can do on camera and off camera, and I think he'd be terrific," Ludwin told Broadcasting & Cable.
