Magic Johnson tells Newark to get smart on HIV/AIDS

All TV - New Jersey, USA - To reach a generation that has always known him as HIV-positive, Earvin "Magic" Johnson knows he can't rely on the shock factor to spread his message.

So he dangles Los Angeles Lakers tickets as an incentive for teens who take an AIDS test. He enlists infected high school and college students to join him onstage in cities and classrooms around the country. And he says it over and over again: get smart before it's too late.

"The more that you're honest with young people, the more the message will sink in," said Johnson, the former Laker who stunned the country by going public with his HIV diagnosis in 1991.

"Bad habits - you've got to give that up, so you can be here for a long time," Johnson said at an appearance in Newark tonight. "You've got to be comfortable with your status."

The point guard-turned-advocate today greeted large crowds in Newark and Paterson as part of the "I Stand with Magic: Campaign to End Black HIV/AIDS," urging blacks to take charge of the disease that's stricken their communities. He has stopped in nearly 20 cities with large minority populations - including Charlotte, Baltimore and Atlanta - since beginning the drive in December 2006.
