Magic Johnson plans HIV-prevention events

Newark Star Ledger - NJ, USA - Earvin "Magic" Johnson, the former NBA basketball star who was diagnosed with HIV 15 years ago and has since become an outspoken advocate for AIDS prevention and treatment, plans to bring his awareness campaign to New Jersey today.

Johnson is scheduled to speak to crowds at Passaic County Community College in Paterson and Newark Symphony Hall as part of his Campaign to End Black HIV/AIDS. The drive, a partnership between the Magic Johnson Foundation and Abbott Laboratories, aims to provide minority communities with information, resources and educational materials about the disease.

Blacks make up 13 percent of the U.S. population, but accounted for 50 percent of new HIV cases in 2004, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Johnson, a 6-foot-9 point guard, won five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and played in 12 All-Star Games during his 13-year NBA career in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1991, he shocked the country by making his HIV status public, but returned after a temporary retirement to become the NBA's first openly HIV-positive player. He has spent much of his time since his second retirement advocating for the HIV/AIDS cause, and treats his own HIV with medication.
