Kyle Petty ensuring racing remains a family affair

San Francisco Chronicle - CA, USA - Don't be fooled by the rural North Carolina roots. Kyle Petty has royal blood in his veins.

"There are two kings," Petty said. "Elvis and The King."

The King, of course, is his father, Richard Petty, winner of seven NASCAR championships and the reigning patriarch of one of the first families of stock car racing.

Kyle is in the Bay Area for Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, where he'll race and be wired for commentary on the TNT broadcast of the Nextel Cup race over the 10-turn, 1.99-mile road course.

The Petty dynasty began with Lee, one of the sports first superstars. His son Richard became one of the most popular drivers of all time. Kyle has seven career wins in his 28-year NASCAR career.

The family has also endured tragedy.

Kyle's son Adam died in a crash at the New Hampshire International Speedway in 2000.

The Pettys still love the sport despite the inherent dangers.

"We've never really thought about it in those terms until Adam's accident," Kyle said. "But it's there... You can't just hibernate."

In tribute to Adam, the family started Victory Junction Gang Camp, which serves terminally ill children.

Petty said that the camp in North Carolina benefits from the support of such current-day superstars as Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson.
