Kyle Petty Charity Ride roars into Randleman

News 14 Carolina - Raleigh, NC, USA - Riding 2,800 miles from Maine to Miami, the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America made a big stop for some big fans at the Victory Junction Gang Camp Wednesday.

Organizers say this year's visit to camp is particularly special for veteran riders.

“The riders have never really gotten to see camp in action. They've never been here when children were here so it's great to match the riders and they get to see the campers that they're raising money for. They get to see how much the campers enjoy what they're doing,” said Pattie Petty, wife of NASCAR driver and camp founder Kyle Petty.

Joining the Pettys for this year's ride is football legend Herschel Walker and former supermodel Niki Taylor.

“I'm a mom of two healthy boys so I think it's very cool that there's a place where kids can come and totally be themselves. Nobody looks at them for their disease -- that is checked out as soon as you get to the gate. They're here, they're one of many kids, they get to meet new friends, [and] they get to pretty much do everything," said Taylor.

Now in its 13th year, the ride has logged more than 45,000 miles and donated more than $9 million to charity.

This week, the camp is designed for kids with burn, skin, or craniofacial disorders. It's all funded by the proceeds from the 2006 charity ride, allowing 125 campers to attend the five-day session for free.

“This is one of the main pillars of our fundraising efforts here at the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Last year we gave a little over a million dollars to camp from this ride and what this ride is -- it not only raises funds -- it raises awareness," said camp founder Kyle Petty.

For the first time ever, you can follow this year's charity ride online. The Kyle Petty Virtual Ride will track the route and each day's adventures with video footage, audio journal entries and photos.
