New York Times - United States - You never know who you’ll meet in Toronto. A few years ago, Sweeny Murti and I were standing on the field and met some producers for the movie “Fever Pitch.” They actually offered Sweeny a role, but he had to work and couldn’t make it.
Anyway, this morning, after Joe Torre’s media briefing, David Beckham appeared behind the batting cage. With a flurry of cameras clicking away all around him, the L.A. Galaxy star, who has tattoos everywhere, took in the sights of batting practice.
One Yankee approached him – Shelley Duncan, who grew up around the Oakland A’s “Bash Brothers” and never seems intimidated. Then Joe Torre ambled over, struck up a conversation, and invited Beckham into the clubhouse.
On Friday, it was Jon Bon Jovi at Yankee Stadium. Today, David Beckham. Tomorrow, who knows? Kyle Farnsworth once told me about meeting Shania Twain when he played for the Cubs. She was so small, he said, he picked her up sideways and held her in front of him, like a lunch tray or something. How’s that for imagery?
