Dallas Bar Salutes Excellence in Legal News Reporting: Kenneth W. Starr To Be Keynote Speaker at Awards Luncheon |
dBusinessNews Dallas (press release) - The Dallas Bar Association will honor the best legal reporting in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Tuesday, October 12, at noon, as it hosts the 27th Annual Philbin Awards Luncheon at the Belo Mansion (2101 Ross Avenue in Dallas). Cash awards and plaques will be presented to local journalists for best feature story and best news report in metro/statewide newspapers, suburban newspapers, best TV news report, radio broadcast, electronic media and magazine feature article.
The keynote speaker for the Awards Luncheon will be Kenneth W. Starr, J.D., former U.S. Solicitor General and current President of Baylor University.
Mr. Starr has had a memorable career in academia, the law and public service. As Solicitor General of the United States from 1989 to 1993, Mr. Starr argued 25 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. From 1994 to 1999, he was appointed to serve as Independent Counsel for five investigations, including Whitewater. He is the author of more than 25 publications and has received numerous honors and awards, including the Jefferson Cup Award from the FBI and the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service.
Mr. Starr previously taught constitutional law as an adjunct professor at New York University School of Law and was a distinguished visiting professor at George Mason University School of Law and Chapman Law School. On February 12, 2010, he was unanimously elected as the 14th President of Baylor University.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Dallas Bar Association and Dallas Bar Foundation established the Philbin Awards in 1983. The awards are presented in memory of Stephen Philbin, an active DBA member and a leading authority on media law, who lost his battle with leukemia in 1982. Winning entries are selected based on the entry’s accuracy, contribution to public debate, educational value (as it relates to the legal system) and the journalist’s initiative in pursuing the story.
Tickets for the awards luncheon are $35 ($20 for members of the media) and can be purchased until October 8. For tickets.
