'Daily Show' comic kicks off election series at UMD |
SouthCoastToday.com - New Bedford, MA, USA - During the 2004 U.S. presidential election, 21 percent of voters under age 30 cited "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" as a major source of campaign news, according to a Pew Research Center poll.
So when the Programming Committee at UMass Dartmouth set out to plan the campus calendar this election year, they immediately thought of the Comedy Central hit.
John Oliver, political commentator and British-born stand-up comedian on "The Daily Show," performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the main auditorium.
Doors open at 7, and the public is invited.
"I love 'The Daily Show.' If it didn't exist, I don't know what I'd do," said Dr. Juli Parker, director of the Women's Resource Center at UMD and faculty member of Women's Studies.
"We want students to think about (where the presidential candidates stand on) the issues. A lot of times, kids don't understand the issues," Dr. Parker said.
"We're also hoping to get a lot of people from the community, especially the Jon Stewart fans ... those of us liberal-minded people who are still kind of in shock that Bush got elected."
According to his biography on "The Daily Show" Web site:
"John Oliver was born and raised in England, Great Britain, in the year of punk 1977. His passport lists his occupation as 'comedian' and as we all know, passports never lie.
"When 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' came knocking at his door, John flung it open and jumped into their arms with a relish which made all parties slightly uncomfortable."
Stand-up comedian Rory Albanese, the co-executive producer at "The Daily Show," will also perform at the event, which kicks off a series focused on the presidential race that runs through November, said Christopher J. Laib, assistant director of student activities, involvement and leadership.
"We're trying to make students more aware of their civic responsibility," he said.
"We're hoping this series will attract students in learning more about the presidential race and actually going out to vote."
