Conan O'Brien returns to Universal City for two nights only (for now), brings TV friends with him! |
Examiner.com - This weekend, stand-up comedian-turned-talk show host Conan O'Brien got back to his roots at Los Angeles' Gibson Amphitheatre. Playing to a sold-out crowd that included television reporters, fans, and celebrities in their own right (including The Office's Craig Robinson, comedian David Spade, and Comcast TV exec Ted Harbert), O'Brien took his "Legally Prohibited (from Being Funny on Television)" Tour to a stage just yards away from where many of the same crowd rallied for him to keep his time slot just months ago.
Of course, being in such close proximity to NBC-Universal called for jokes in and of itself. O'Brien started the night off right by taking a jab at his former employer's expense: "If you listen carefully," he said, "you can hear the sound of bad ideas being greenlit!"
O'Brien brought to the stage all of the things Team Coco members have been obsessing on and searching for on YouTube during the last few months he has been off-air, including the String Dance, Andy Richter, and the Masturbating Bear (who is apparently now the "Self-Pleasuring Panda"-- most likely because NBC-Uni held the rights to the original character). And in keeping with the format of his nightly talk show, he had a live band play an intro; he performed a monologue; and he even brought out "Cocette" back-up dancers and some special guests. Parks & Recreation's Aziz Ansari, Mad Men's Jon Hamm, 30 Rock's Jack McBrayer, and film stars Jim Carrey and Jonah Hill were some who joined O'Brien on stage for bits that included the "Chuck Norris lever."
