Colbert gets to know 'the Fightin' Stoners'

Raw Story - Cambridge, MA, USA - Stephen Colbert apologized to his audience this week for having focused too closely on members of Congress in his "Better Know a District" series of interviews.

"I thought our laws were written by lawmakers," Colbert stated. "But like the best literature, they are often crafted by ghostwriters. These uncredited law writers are called 'lobbyists' and it is estimated there are 35,000 of them working in Washington, DC."

He then introduced "the second installment in my 35,000-part series, 'Better Know a Lobby.' Tonight, the drug lobby -- the Fightin' Stoners!"

The subject of Colbert's interview was Ethan Nadelmann of the Drug Policy Alliance, a mild-mannered academic with degrees and teaching experience in law, economics, and politics.

"The war on drugs," Colbert asked Nadelmann. "Great war or the Greatest War?"

"The war on drugs can only be regarded as the greatest war if you regard the Vietnam War or the war in Iraq today as the greatest war," Nadelmann replied. "These are wars spending hundreds of billions of dollars when we're destined to lose one way or another."
