Award for funniest person: Tina Fey
MSNBC - USA - Tina Fey is, at this moment, our funniest person. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are more topical and more reliable political satirists, Steve Carell incorporates more poignancy, and if you’re one of the many internet sensations whose lip-synching routine, uproarious wedding dance, or movie send-up has earned you instant fame, more power to you.

But on an ongoing basis, our funniest person — bringing the greatest hilarity to the greatest number — is Tina Fey. Her first big movie as a lead, “Baby Mama,” opens on Friday, and a nation full of theater-goers in need of a laugh crosses its fingers.

Editorial: Jon Stewart's Dilemma
Dallas Morning News - Dallas, TX, USA - It's hard to figure out who's more wickedly funny: Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart. Both late-night TV smarties can split your sides, whether it's mock conservative Colbert, with his smack-down of liberals, or genuinely liberal Stewart, with his smiling skewering of conservatives.

Their Comedy Central shows remain so hot they're regular stops for politicians trying to sell themselves to voters. Just last week, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama risked Mr. Colbert's lampooning in order to make their pitches before the Pennsylvania primary.

Both hosts have perfected what The New York Times calls a "wry, anti-political style." But while we laugh along with

Stewart will host the second biannual “Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education” on April 13 at the Beacon Theater in New York. The show will air live at 8 p.m. on Comedy Central.

The night will feature stand- up routines, sketches and short films from a gluttony of comic talent, including Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler.

Kimberly Peirce finds boys who cry
Los Angeles Times - CA, USA - IT is difficult to separate writer-director Kimberly Peirce's new film, "Stop-Loss," from a joke host Jon Stewart made in his monologue at the Oscars. Noting the poor box office performances in 2007 of Iraq-war-related films like "Redacted," "Rendition" and "In the Valley of Elah," Stewart issued a tongue-in-cheek, President Bush-like call for a surge of war movies.

"Withdrawing the Iraq movies would only embolden the audience," he deadpanned. "We cannot let the audience win."

He has a point. Hollywood's concerted if doomed attempts to meet the country's state of mind have yet to yield a coherent movie experience. Peirce would say that

Dana Perino Disses Helen Thomas On The Daily Show
Huffington Post - New York, NY, USA - Dana Perino gets points for bravery, both for going on The Daily Show and for doing so in hot pink — but otherwise last night's interview with the current White House Press Secretary was sort of...uncomfortable. She handled it like a pro, of course — Jon Stewart called her "unflappable" — but otherwise it did little to contradict her image as a smooth spinmeister who remains on message no matter what other human response may be required. (For example, Stewart picked up on last week's headline wherein she said that no one in the briefing room asked her about Iraq

Comedy Central's fall lineup to include animated Snoop Dogg
Paste Magazine - Decatur, GA, USA - Unlike many cable TV stations that claim to focus on a topic via their name (MTV, we're looking at you), Comedy Central actually does, more than occasionally, have comedy on it. Not only that, but the station once known primarily for Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Dr. Katz has, in years since, become home to a multitude of witty, culturally relevant programming. Really, where would the world be without Jon Stewart, purveyor of nightly news to an entire generation? Brian Williams, we hardly know ye.

This week, Comedy Central announced its new shows for the 2008-2009 season, which star everyone from

80th Annual Oscars Shine
University of Hartford Informer (subscription) - West Hartford, CT, USA - Glamour, glitter, tears and gold all define the monumental night that is the 80th Annual Academy Awards. Another big year for an award show. But the Oscars lucked out and the writer's strike ended two weeks ago so it was a not a night full of montages of past shows.

The night was full of witty introductions, and Jon Stewart was the perfect host. He brought laughs and spur of the moment jokes that kept the audience interested when some of the acceptance speeches put them to sleep. No actor or actress was safe from his biting humor.

Did Conan, Colbert or Stewart Create Huckabee?
Town Hall - Washington, DC, USA - Did you catch the great showdown this past week? No, not Super Tuesday but the late-night television comedian battle over who discovered and "made" GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.

While Republicans and Democrats were slugging it out at the polls, three kingpins of comedy were in chortle combat for the right to be called the creator of the GOP contender and his surge in this election race. Even they are somewhat surprised this 10-year Arkansas governor outlasted candidates such as Giuliani, Thompson and Romney to be among the finalists for the GOP nomination.

Ferguson wants Jon Stewart to replace Letterman
TV Squad - Santa Monica, CA, USA - Awwww, isn't it nice when one late night host gives a compliment to another?

Late, Late Show host Craig Ferguson says that he would like to see Jon Stewart take over for David Letterman if and when Letterman retires. Letterman's current contract with CBS is up in 2010, which just happens to be the same time that Stewart's contract is up with The Daily Show and Comedy Central.

But that's not the most interesting part of this interview with Ferguson over at Broadcasting and Cable. Ferguson hints strongly that if Letterman stays, he'll stay, but if Letterman does indeed retire, he'll probably

Ferguson Backs Stewart for Late Show Gig
TheCelebrityCafe.com - Valley Stream, NY, USA - Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson is backing Jon Stewart to take over for David Letterman, if Letterman leaves CBS when his contract is up in 2010.

“I think Jon should replace Dave if Dave decides to go,” Ferguson told Broadcasting & Cable last week.

“I think Dave should stay, I think he ain’t done. But if Dave is finished, I think Jon has earned the job.”

It seems funny to many, including certain writers at TheCelebrityCafe.com, that Ferguson supports Stewart, and not himself, for Letterman’s current job.

Ferguson’s support is evermore interesting because Stewart is only signed with Comedy Central through 2010, making

Writers' strike forces late-night hosts to improvise
Beacon Newspaper (subscription) - Miami, FL, USA - Without the safety net of their writing staffs to help them craft their jokes and construct their premises, many late night talk show hosts have been forced to wing it as the writer's strike has entered its fourth month.

From "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" to "The Colbert Report" with Stephen Colbert, the late night hosts have been forced to rely more on their wits and charm than jokes, and the results have ranged from the brilliant (The Colbert-Conan-Jon Stewart 'fued') to the awful (everything Jay Leno has done, which, is actually, not a big change from normal pre-writers' strike Leno.)

When hosts attack
Binghamton University Pipe Dream - NY, USA - Many people believe the writers’ strike affects mostly the viewers, but after a series of unfortunate and strangely humorous events on late night television, it apparently affects the hosts as well.

The feud between Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart over Mike Huckabee’s success in his run for presidential candidacy has been central in all of the hosts’ programs. Of course, I use the term “feud” lightly as it’s obvious that they are, as Jon Stewart said, “wasting time on all three of our shows.”

It began with Colbert claiming that he made Huckabee because he was on “The Colbert Report”

'Daily Show' comic kicks off election series at UMD
SouthCoastToday.com - New Bedford, MA, USA - During the 2004 U.S. presidential election, 21 percent of voters under age 30 cited "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" as a major source of campaign news, according to a Pew Research Center poll.

So when the Programming Committee at UMass Dartmouth set out to plan the campus calendar this election year, they immediately thought of the Comedy Central hit.

John Oliver, political commentator and British-born stand-up comedian on "The Daily Show," performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the main auditorium.

Doors open at 7, and the public is invited.

Will Stewart Grace The Oscars, WGA Strike Or Not?
Multichannel News - New York, NY, USA - If the Writers Guild of America strike isn’t settled in time for the Academy Awards ceremony Feb. 24, will Jon Stewart still show up to host the event?

The question surfaced Thursday because Stewart tonight, Feb. 7, had been slated to host an event honoring Viacom and CBS chairman Sumner Redstone in New York City. But Stewart cancelled, and now the gala, sponsored by the Paley Center for the Media, is set to be emceed by Charlie Rose.

There’s been speculation that Comedy Central’s Stewart stepped down to spite his masters at media conglomerate Viacom, which is one of the entities the

Conan, Colbert and Stewart Unite in Epic Brawl
About - News & Issues - New York, NY, USA - Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart resorted to fisticuffs while appearing on each other's shows to settle a mock feud over who made Mike Huckabee.

The fight began a few weeks ago when O'Brien claimed he was responsible for Huckabee's success in the presidential primaries because he made Chuck Norris, who, in turn, made Huckabee. Therefore O'Brien made Huckabee. Colbert, for his part, claimed that Huckabee's success was due to the "Colbert bump" Huckabee received after appearing on his show.

Conan O'Brien vs. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert O'Brien and Colbert sniped back and forth, and later Stewart got into the

Jewish Action - New York, NY, USA - On Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama came to New York for a series of events - including a meeting with prominent Jewish activists and leadership.

The Senator's most public meeting was his interview with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show . Prior to that appearance, Obama met privately with a roomful of leading Jewish New Yorkers including Orthodox Union president Steve Savitsky and the current and immediate past chair of the Conference of Presidents of American Jewish Organizations. The meeting was, we're told, an opportunity for Sen. Obama to informally and directly discuss his views with regard to U.S.

Hot Box: Television to talk about
Toronto Star - Ontario, Canada - War is Hell(arious): A few years ago, accepting dual honours for Best Information/News at the annual TV Critics Association Awards, Jon Stewart sheepishly asked, "Uh ... you do know this is fake news, right?" The line blurs even more this week as Daily Show correspondent Rob Riggle reports from the front lines of Iraq – the real Iraq, not some cheap green-screen special effect. Riggle is ideally suited, as a comedic actor, and highly decorated major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, having served in Liberia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. His reports will run all this week on The Daily Show,

Celebs lead high life in the Hamptons
USA Today - USA - A whole lot of uptown girls grooved to Billy Joel Saturday night.

Renee Zellweger, Kelly Ripa and Mary-Kate Olsen danced as Joel performed at the Social @ Ross concert, a series of events that is becoming the marquee bash of the already glitzy Hamptons party circuit. The musical extravaganzas previously featured Prince and the Dave Matthews Band, and with tickets selling for $4,000 each, it's no wonder the night is a lavish one.

Zellweger clapped her hands and danced with a mystery man to Joel's encore of Piano Man. Ripa grooved along with her husband, Mark Consuelos. Alec Baldwin stood in the

Comedy Central's InDecision 2008 Website Arrives A Year Early
Cinema Blend - USA - Comedy Central’s long running InDecision campaign is making the jump online. The network announced that a new political humor website will launch on Wednesday, well ahead of original plans. Even though the next presidential election won’t occur until November of 2008 the ramp up in the race has caused the network to launch a year ahead of time.

InDecision began as a segment on the popular ‘Daily Show’ faux news broadcast back when Jon Stewart was barely a blip on the general populace’s radar. It has become a major event, offering humor alongside real news and political commentary. Stewart and his

NBC and Jon Stewart do some networking
New York Daily News - New York, NY, USA - NBC's top brass may be on the hunt for Jon Stewart.

NBC Universal president Jeff Zucker and NBC Entertainment/Universal Media Studios co-chair Marc Graboff recently met with Stewart and his agent, according to Broadcasting & Cable magazine.

The magazine, citing a network source, said the NBC officials didn't pitch specifics and described a meeting as "exploratory."

Stewart's deal to host "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central runs through 2008.

NBC is seeking to plan its late-night future in 2009, when Conan O'Brien will move from the 12:30 a.m. slot to take over "The Tonight Show," unless something changes.

NBC wants Jon Stewart
TV Squad - Santa Monica, CA, USA - Every time I say that I think Jon Stewart might one day go to late night TV again (network talk show-wise, I mean), people comment that there's no way he'd leave The Daily Show because it's so popular, it gets buzz, it's the perfect job for him, etc, etc. And all that happens to be true. But I also think that people change jobs on TV all the time. They want a different challenge, and often plan their moves for when a show has lost it's buzz or isn't quite as challenging anymore.

I bring this up because Broadcasting & Cable
