Bruce decides No. 80 isn't a good fit with 49ers
Santa Rosa Press Democrat - Santa Rosa, CA, USA - Veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes is scheduled to visit the 49ers tomorrow, reports the NFL Network. Spikes, 31, a 10-year veteran, recently failed a physical with the Eagles and was released. Spikes missed the final two games of the season with a torn rotator cuff. He ranked second on the Eagles with 139 tackles, 90 of which were solo efforts. Clearly, the 49ers are interested. (They're not going to bring in someone to visit if they weren't.) Unquestionably, they also want to check out the status of his shoulder. The 49ers do not want to confirm this visit until he arrives.

USA Today Names Joe Montana, Jerry Rice Two Best Players of Last 25 Years
AOL SPORTS - New York, NY, USA - USA Today finished its listing of the Top 25 NFL players of the last 25 years today, and No. 1 is Joe Montana. Last week, the paper ranked Jerry Rice No. 2.

I have some rather big problems with the list (having Tom Brady and Emmitt Smith ahead of Dan Marino was incredibly stupid), but I can't argue too much about Montana and Rice going 1-2. Montana's style of passing revolutionized NFL offenses, and Rice was the best receiver of his generation by a ridiculous margin, setting records that may never be surpassed.

Such rankings are just a fun off-season diversion, but

No. 2: Rice ran away from the field with grace - To commemorate USA TODAY's 25th anniversary, a panel of USA TODAY's NFL reporters and editors has produced an anthology of the 25 best NFL players of the past 25 years. Coming Monday, we will reveal the No. 1 player:

Jerry Rice, the only player in NFL history to score 200 touchdowns and a man who raised the bar for many records to new heights, is No. 2 on USA TODAY's list.

Called "the greatest player to ever play the game" by his former San Francisco offensive coordinator and current Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, Rice left the NFL prior to the 2005

Star athletes like fish out of water at Tahoe golf
San Diego Union Tribune - United States - It's one thing to ride a bike as fast as Lance Armstrong, drive the lane like Michael Jordan, throw a pass like Carson Palmer or catch one like Jerry Rice.

But hit a golf ball in front of a big crowd?

“Golf,” Armstrong says, stretching out the word like a British sports analyst. “It's a whole 'nother sport, whole 'nother beast. Hell, I get nervous when the lady in the beverage cart pulls up on the tee box.”

And he's not even in the tournament.

The seven-time champion of the Tour de France is set to play in the pro-am event preceding the American

Dave Albee: NASCAR earns Rice's respect
Marin Independent-Journal - San Rafael, CA, USA - JERRY RICE came and went in a black Cadillac Escalade, but he had the ride of his life in between.

The NFL record-breaking wide receiver put on a fire-retardant racing suit Monday at Infineon Raceway and climbed into the passenger seat of a 3,500-pound, 600 horse-power NASCAR-styled stock car with - gulp - a "Flame Broiled" logo on its side panels. Rice then sped around the 10-turn roller coaster-like road course strapped in a car that was probably about 100 degrees inside going upwards of 100 mph.

You might say by the time Rice climbed out of the car he was a
