ESPN host falls head over heels for city, Lake Modano
The Capital Times - Madison, WI, USA - MANY OF you probably already suspected that you lived in the greatest college sports town in the universe, or at least the Big Ten, and you didn't need a national radio host to confirm it. But last week, one did.

I finally got a chance to listen to Scott Van Pelt's recent ode to Madison on ESPN Radio, and it was an amazing thing to hear. Van Pelt sounded like a local tourism official who occasionally takes a second drink.

Scott Van Pelt is a former Golf Channel correspondent now best known as an anchor on SportsCenter on ESPN television.

Last week Thursday,

NBC, Fox make sense for Patrick
USA Today - USA - Studio hosts get lots more on-air face time than anybody else in TV sports. So Dan Patrick, after anchoring SportsCenter for 17 years and popping up to host things such as ABC/ESPN's NBA coverage, presumably has a pretty marketable mug — rather than just a face for radio.

Patrick, leaving ESPN Aug. 17, has only announced he'll do a syndicated radio show and said he doesn't "have any magic potion that says I know what I'm doing."

So where would he fit in? Handicapping the prospects:

•NBC. NBC's Olympic announcing lineup, with notable exceptions such as Mary Carillo, has suffered from excessive earnestness.

Patrick announces that he will exit ESPN
Hollywood Reporter - United States - Dan Patrick, half of the duo that helped bring "SportsCenter" to fame in the 1990s, will leave ESPN next month after 18 years at the network.

Patrick, 51, said Monday that for the past three years at ESPN he felt like he was "running in quicksand" and had talked to management about doing other things beyond his TV work and hosting the weekday "The Big Show" on ESPN Radio.

"I felt like I was doing assembly line work and I really wasn't doing anything I was proud of," Patrick said.

Patrick said he had told ESPN management of his feelings and had suggested

Star athletes like fish out of water at Tahoe golf
San Diego Union Tribune - United States - It's one thing to ride a bike as fast as Lance Armstrong, drive the lane like Michael Jordan, throw a pass like Carson Palmer or catch one like Jerry Rice.

But hit a golf ball in front of a big crowd?

“Golf,” Armstrong says, stretching out the word like a British sports analyst. “It's a whole 'nother sport, whole 'nother beast. Hell, I get nervous when the lady in the beverage cart pulls up on the tee box.”

And he's not even in the tournament.

The seven-time champion of the Tour de France is set to play in the pro-am event preceding the American
