Catching up with Kevin Brown: Pitcher recalls 'unhittable' day |
Palm Beach Post - FL, United States - Kevin Brown is three years into his retirement from professional baseball, but he still has a busy schedule.
"I've got four boys, and three of them are involved in sports now, so it's full enough now just chasing them around," Brown, 43, said from Macon, Ga.
Brown - who pitched for 17 seasons in the majors, including 1996-97 with the Marlins - spoke the other day while sitting on the bench of the Tattnall Trojans, a travel baseball team that includes his 17-year-old son, Ridge. Brown is the Trojans' pitching coach.
He also is pitching coach for Tattnall Square Academy, which just won a Georgia state high school title.
He is so into his role as father and coach that he forgot that the anniversary of his no-hitter with the Marlins is just two days away.
It was on June 10, 1997, that he beat the San Francisco Giants 9-0, allowing only one batter to reach base.
"It's not something I dwell on, but it was definitely one of the highlights of my career," he said.
Brown retired after the 2005 season with a 211-144 record and six All-Star appearances. His life since then has not been entirely without drama.
Brown was mentioned prominently in the Mitchell Report in December as a user of steroids and human growth hormone. He also made headlines in 2006 for getting in a dispute with a neighbor over grass clippings, in which police were called.
But he has nothing but fond memories of his time with the Marlins. In '97, when the Marlins won the World Series, he had the lowest ERA in the league (1.89)
