Bob Saget gets 'Strange' with new A&E show

OCRegister - Life has been strange lately for stand-up comedian and actor Bob Saget. The 54-year-old is currently hard at work with his new real-life A&E series, “Strange Days with Bob Saget,” which premiers on Tuesday at 10 p.m.  In between dealings with the show, Saget is also out on his national “Strange Days” stand-up tour.

“It’s a lot of work, but there are worse problems,” he says during a recent phone interview.

He was so busy wrapping up the final edits on the show – which he also executive produces – that he pushed back his stand-up date at the Grove of Anaheim on Nov. 19. He’ll now be coming to the venue on Feb. 26.

As for the series, Saget says he thought it would just be “a cool way to parachute down into a world and learn about it.”

“I had this idea of me being able to sleep over at everybody’s house, but that felt too celebrity driven and I didn’t want it to be narcissistic. I got to go out and shoot these episodes for six months and it’s really crazy stuff.”

In each installment of the series Saget finds an interesting subculture to join in on. He searched for Big Foot with Sasquatch hunters, rode 1,200 miles with a hardcore motorcycle club, explored the underbelly of the pro wrestling circuit, joined a fraternity at Cornell University, became a counselor-in-training at a sleepover camp for 11-14 year old boys and experienced Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson-style with fellow comic, Jeff Ross.

Filming these episodes only gave Saget more material for his act. Though he’s most known for his clean-cut “Full House” and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” persona, Saget has a dark side. He let his freak flag fly in his 2007 HBO special, “That Ain’t Right” and was able to dabble on the raunchy side in his appearances on “Entourage.” But, when it came down to Saget becoming a counselor-in-training for his series, the camp warned him beforehand that they wanted “the ‘Full House’ Bob Saget, not the ‘Entourage’ Bob Saget.”
