"Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?": Now with no child actors! |
MSNBC - USA - "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" will launch its second season on Aug. 30, with host Jeff Foxworthy returning with a new crop of fifth graders. Foxworthy joined the TV critics'summer press tour for lunch on Sunday to discuss the show.
Right away, someone asked Foxworthy a question that MSNBC.com's Ask the Reality Experts column is frequently asked: Are the kids coached? Foxworthy says no. "They're not coached in how to answer the questions, nor are they given the answers," he said. "You know, it's like any television show." However, he did say "When they're there with us, they have to go to school, and so they have subjects, but they're not prepared for the tests. I mean, they have workbooks where these subjects are in there, maybe some of the questions would appear in the things that they are studying."
Suspicious viewers often ask if the kids are actors. And yes, some of the first-season kids have been, including Laura Marano, now starring in Kelsey Grammer's new sitcom, "Back to You." But says Foxworthy, "none of the 5th-graders that we have on here this year are actors or even, as far as I know, want to be an actor. They're just real kids."
