'American Idol' judging panel in a grumpy mood after too much Beatles

San Jose Mercury News - CA, USA - Now that the "American Idol" finalists are done defiling the Beatles' sacred songbook, maybe we can raise the bar just a bit. Here's a quick rundown of what our Readers Judging Panel thought of last week's developments and their expectations for tonight's show (8 p.m., Channels 2 and 40). Also, please welcome Colleen Gonzalez, our guest judge for the week.

Patti Compton, 76, Rossmoor

Last week: Though Carly Smithson is not my cup of tea, I was shocked to see her in the bottom three. Good riddance to Amanda Overmyer. She and her tongue didn't belong.

Looking ahead: Jason Castro and Chikezie are going to have to really deliver to stay in the fray. I'm excited about the list of mentors on deck. Especially Neil Diamond. I love him!

Maria Sajjad, 22, Concord

Last week: Michael Johns, not Carly, deserved to be in the bottom three, and Kristy Lee Cook deserved to leave. Unfortunately, we live in a twisted world where the least talented singers get a free ride, Kelly Pickler included.

Looking ahead: Tonight will be a breath of fresh air if nobody sings a Beatles song, or busts out a harmonica. I predict that Michael Johns will give another mediocre performance, but get by because of his Aussie accent, and that Kristy will butcher another song I once loved.

Neyshia Go, 17, Antioch

Last week: The same theme

Looking ahead: Despite the boredom, I'm still excited to see what the contestants have to offer. I'm also looking forward to seeing who stays and who goes. I've been totally surprised so far.

Danny Wallace, 28, Antioch

Last week: A big disappointment. The singers kept talking about having only 90 seconds to sing, yet there's a two-hour show. "Idol" has more padding than a La-Z-Boy showroom.

Looking ahead: I'm expecting a big rally from Carly. David Archuleta will continue to annoy me, and I half expect to see Chikezie come out with his hair dyed gray and make like Charley Pride.

Rob Miller, 46, Oakland

Last week: In what universe does Kristy survive and Amanda get voted off the island? I'm outraged! (Though not as much as when my fave, Alexandrea Lushington, got the ax.)

Looking ahead: Is anyone else sick of the whole Randy-Paula vs. Simon thing? It's childish, rude and unfunny.

Tyler Maddalon, 10, Danville

Last week: It was a pretty weak night with no superstrong performances.

Looking ahead: Tonight should be the best night yet if they do newer songs. If they stay way back in the '90s, it could be a disaster.

Guest judge Colleen Gonzalez, 40, Concord

Colleen is a married mother of two, who has "tortured" her family week after week with her rants and raves about "Idol." She calls herself the "perfect musical critic" — someone who can't play an instrument and can't sing, but has "tons of advice and opinions."

Oh, and she currently has Blake Lewis' CD in her car player ("It's awesome, by the way"). Look for Colleen's critique right after Tuesday's show on the TV Freak blog.
